Oh, I feel this. In 1985, I was 12-13, living in a small college town in Ohio, and Prince was my guru. I had Purple Rain on a cassette tape that a friend recorded for me (I later acquired the vinyl) and while I wasn't allowed to see the movie until much later, I sensed the heat rising from the album. In junior high, Purple Rain was known as the song that "if a guy really likes you, he'll ask you to dance to THAT one" because it was the longest slow song on any DJ's playlist. I did get to see him live, when I called Chicago home in the early 2000s. It was amazing. It was my birthday - sometime in my early 30s, I think. The venue was crap (I don't like an arena where I have to climb over too many people on bench seats to get to the bathroom) but Prince reigned supreme that night, as he always did.
