This was one of my mom's favorites as well, back in the 70s and 80s when I was growing up. My husband and I inherited my parents' record collection after my dad passed away, and I know this album is in there, waiting for me to dig it out of a box. I can't wait to discover it again! I can't remember if I've ever seen the movie, but I love (and still own) the book. I agree with your assessment of those who wrote it off without even giving it a chance.
